Mother buys daughter-in-law a dress from Spirit Halloween to wear to her husband's graduation: 'I didn’t ask for a dress'

Spipi Peasant Dress INCLUDES: Dress ADULT OLARGE 12-14 USA $34.99
My MIL got me a dress for my husbands graduation (he's in the army and I wanted to look nice since this is a big accomplishment) but she gave me a Spirit Halloween Peasant dress.. how do I take this? I'd like to think this has no mean intentions but I honestly can't

understand why you'd give someone a dress like this instead of just not getting one or thrifting a dress if you really wanted to get one. Even just taking it out of the package so I never saw what it was called. Am I thinking too much into it?

Edit 1: -I am going to talk to her about this whole thing tomorrow and will update yall here. - no, I'm not a bot and this isn't a joke post. - this isn't the first time she's done something like this, she's not stupid or senile, I just can't tell if she had good or intentions.

- she went to the store and bought this. Not online and not a second hand accidentally bought a costume dress. - I can't wear it even if I wanted to because it's see thru in the sun. - I didn't ask for a dress, I've actually told her that I want to go thrifting for one multiple times.

Commenters gave their thoughts on what might be going on here.

Substantial_Bee_4451 Ask her what her intentions were point blank. She may have just thought it was a pretty dress and didn't think about the implications, so let her know what those implications are so she can either double down or apologize. Then you'll have your answer.

A woman browses through dresses on a rack
Sackoteeth Take it back, exchange it for a witch costume and give it to her.

Beautiful_Country626 Is there a possibility she ordered it? And it's like all those fast fashion ads where you see a picture of a gorgeous dress/outfit but something cheap is actually shipped to you? maybe she just saw a picture of the model in the dress and does not even realize it's a cheap Halloween costume

Observerette Just don't wear it. If she asks, say you're saving it for Halloween since it's a costume. She can't have been serious, hahahaha. Just laugh in response to everything she says. Just maliciously assume that anything she says about this subject is a joke in line with this gag gift.

niqo Jesus g either she knows better and is malicious or she is truly just an idiot. Completely diabolical behaviour.

PinkPuffballofDOOM There is no reason to give you a costume from spirit Halloween that literally says "peasant dress" Thrifting is one thing, discount is another thing... spirit Halloween is literally

her telling you what she thinks of you. It's either that or she has so few brain cells that she thinks that's okay but id be checking for a pulse at that point. Sorry, but she doesn't like you

dabossnumba8 This is either a joke that didn't land, completely made up, or she hates you Imao

JustCallInSick My mom means no ill will, she would buy me this and be like "I know it says it's a costume, but I thought it was a pretty dress you'd like". She goes to auctions and picks up stuff for me all the time. Sometimes it makes me laugh because I can't understand her train of thought with some of the purchases

punkrockcockblock She didn't give you a dress, she gave you a Halloween costume. There's very little chance she didn't know what she was doing.
